The Route: One Border Matters
Nearly all commercial road cargo enters Bhutan through the Jaigaon (India) – Phuentsholing (Bhutan) crossing in Alipurduar district, West Bengal. From Kolkata the corridor runs via Siliguri to Jaigaon — roughly 700 km, 2–3 days by truck. Phuentsholing is Bhutan’s commercial hub; from there goods move onward to Thimphu (~170 km of hill road, about a day), Paro and other destinations.
Documents You’ll Need
- Commercial invoice — with accurate goods description and value.
- E-way bill — for the Indian leg to the border, mandatory above the value threshold. Note the Ship-To GSTIN rule that took effect on 1 August 2026 — get the consignee’s GSTIN (or mark URP) right before you book.
- Bhutan import formalities — handled at Phuentsholing; Bhutanese importers registered with the Department of Revenue & Customs clear goods against the invoice. Certain categories (food, pharma, plant/animal products) need additional certificates.
- Transporter documentation — vehicle papers and, for Indian trucks entering Bhutan, entry permits arranged at the border.
