Kolkata to Guwahati is one of the longest regular freight lanes out of West Bengal — roughly 1,000 km by road — and quotes for it vary more than shippers expect. Part of the reason is that almost all of it, whether the load is bound for Guwahati, further into Assam, or beyond, funnels through the same narrow stretch of North Bengal known as the Siliguri Corridor. That bottleneck, plus vehicle choice and season, is what actually moves the price. Here’s how to read a quote so you know what you’re paying for.
The Two Pricing Models
1. Part Load (PTL) — priced per kg or per unit
Your consignment shares a truck with other freight heading the same way, and you pay for the weight or volume you occupy. This is the economical choice for anything from a few cartons up to about 3 tonnes. Because the truck consolidates other bookings before departure, transit is quoted as a range rather than a fixed date.
2. Full Truck Load (FTL) — priced per vehicle
You book the whole vehicle: direct pickup, no consolidation stop, fastest and safest for the distance involved. On a run this long, vehicle choice matters even more than on shorter routes — a Tata 407 and a 22-ft container truck carry very different running costs across 1,000 km. FTL becomes the economical option once your load is large enough to justify a dedicated vehicle, generally above 3–4 tonnes.
The Factors That Move the Price
- Weight and volume. You’re charged on whichever is higher — actual weight or volumetric weight. Bulky-but-light goods are priced by the space they take up, not just the scale.
- Goods type. Fragile, high-value or sensitive cargo needs careful handling and sometimes a dedicated vehicle rather than a shared one — priced accordingly.
- Vehicle type. 407 (~2.5T) → 709 (~4.5T) → 14ft (~7T) → 22ft (10T+). Matching the right vehicle to your load is where an experienced transporter saves you money on a long haul — see our full guide to truck types for a breakdown of each.
- Fuel prices. Diesel is the single largest cost input on a 1,000 km run, more so than on shorter Bengal routes, so quotes track it closely.
- The Siliguri Corridor bottleneck. Virtually all road freight from Kolkata into Assam and the wider North-East passes through this narrow stretch of North Bengal. Congestion or road conditions here — see our NH10 monsoon advisory — affect Guwahati-bound trucks just as much as trucks terminating in Siliguri itself.
- Season and demand. Festival-season restocking (see our guide to planning freight around Durga Puja and Diwali 2026) and monsoon disruptions both tighten truck availability on this corridor.
Hidden Charges to Ask About Before You Book
A trustworthy quote for a route this long should state clearly whether it includes: loading/unloading labour, door pickup and door delivery (versus godown-to-godown), toll and checkpost costs across three states, waiting/detention charges if loading is delayed, and GST. Ask for the all-inclusive figure in writing before the truck is booked. At Hindusthan Road Carriers, the rate we agree is the rate you pay — it’s how we’ve kept customers since 1985.
One paperwork item worth checking regardless of the quote: since 1 August 2026, e-way bills require a Ship-To GSTIN for Bill-To/Ship-To shipments. On an interstate run like this, confirm the correct Ship-To GSTIN with whoever handles your billing before dispatch, so the truck isn’t held up at generation.
Typical Transit Time
Kolkata to Guwahati runs roughly 1,000 km via NH27, through North Bengal and the Siliguri Corridor into Assam. Typically that’s 3–4 days for a full truck load and 4–5 days for a part load (see our Kolkata to Guwahati & North-East route page for the full breakdown), and monsoon conditions on the North Bengal stretch can add further delay. Onward delivery beyond Guwahati into other North-East states adds more time depending on destination. If you’re also shipping to Siliguri or Sikkim on a related order, our Kolkata to Siliguri transport charges guide covers that shorter leg separately.
PTL or FTL for This Route?
Given the distance, the calculation is less forgiving than on a short haul: a part load that sits waiting for consolidation adds real days to an already long transit, while an FTL booked half-empty wastes money over 1,000 km. If you’re unsure which fits your shipment, our Full Truck Load vs Part Load guide walks through the decision in more detail, or call us with your weight and volume and we’ll tell you straight.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to send goods from Kolkata to Guwahati?
There’s no fixed rate — it depends on whether you book PTL (priced per kg/unit) or FTL (priced per vehicle), the vehicle size, your goods type, and current fuel prices. Share your weight, volume and pickup/delivery points and we can quote same-day.
Why does the Siliguri Corridor affect Guwahati-bound freight?
Almost all road freight moving from Kolkata into Assam and the North-East passes through the narrow Siliguri Corridor in North Bengal. Congestion or monsoon-season road conditions on this stretch affect transit times and truck availability for Guwahati shipments just as they do for freight terminating in Siliguri or Sikkim.
How long does transport from Kolkata to Guwahati take?
Typically 3–4 days for a full truck load and 4–5 days for a part load, covering the roughly 1,000 km via NH27 and the Siliguri corridor. Onward delivery into other North-East states adds further time depending on destination, and monsoon conditions on the North Bengal stretch can add delay to any of these estimates.
Does the e-way bill Ship-To GSTIN rule apply to Kolkata-Guwahati shipments?
Yes, if your shipment involves a Bill-To/Ship-To transaction. Since 1 August 2026, e-way bills for such shipments require the Ship-To GSTIN (or URP for an unregistered consignee) to be entered correctly — confirm this with whoever handles your billing before the truck is booked, so dispatch isn’t held up at generation.
Should I book PTL or FTL for a Kolkata to Guwahati shipment?
For loads under roughly 3 tonnes, PTL is usually cheaper but adds consolidation time on top of an already long transit. For larger loads, or when you need a firmer delivery window, FTL is worth the higher cost. Our FTL vs PTL guide covers the trade-off in more detail.
